What does the maternity nurse do?

Our maternity nurse takes care of you and your newborn baby after the birth with the main goals of a successful recovery of you as a mother and integration of your child in the family; so that you and your partner can take care of your child with confidence after the birth. The maternity nurse:

  • takes care of you and your baby,
  • gives you and your partner information and advice about the care of your baby,
  • guides and supports you in feeding and breastfeeding,
  • keeps an eye on whether there are any specific problems or risks and contacts your midwife or other agencies, if necessary,
  • takes care of your family, maternity visits and housekeeping.

The maternity nurse will discuss the details of these tasks with you and will evaluate with you on a daily basis whether everything is going according to plan.

CARE FOR YOU AND YOUR BABY

The maternity nurse is there for you and your baby first and foremost. She regularly checks on your baby (temperature, drinking behaviour, weight, etc.) and takes good care of him. The maternity nurse also helps you with your physical care, checks your health daily (e.g., position of the uterus, temperature, possible stitches), keeps an eye on how you feel and makes sure you get enough rest. This way you can recover optimally and fully enjoy your postpartum period and your baby.

The maternity nurse keeps track of all the checks in the Care Plan. The information in the Care Plan is also intended for your own midwife who visits you during the maternity period. The nurse at the health centre will also use this information after the care has been transferred.

INFORMATION AND ADVICE

The maternity nurse helps you and your partner with the care of your baby. For example, she supports you when you give your baby his first bath, and she gives information about safe sleeping. She will also give you tips on how to involve brothers and/or sisters with your new baby. During the course of the period, she will advise you and your partner on a suitable daily schedule, so that you are well prepared for the time after the birth. The maternity nurse is happy to answer any questions you might have.

GUIDANCE IN BREASTFEEDING

PUUR Maternity Care believes that breastfeeding is the first choice when it comes to feeding a newborn baby. The maternity nurse will guide and support you with the aim of making breastfeeding a success. If you choose to bottle feed, the maternity nurse will also support you with her professional knowledge and expertise in this area.

CARE FOR YOUR FAMILY, MATERNITY VISITS AND HOUSEHOLD

During the week of the birth, the maternity nurse also takes care of your family and household. Depending on the number of hours of care agreed upon, and of course in consultation with you, she does certain tasks in the daily household. Of course, the maternity visit is not forgotten. And naturally, there is also room for a little pampering!

EXTRA HELP IN YOUR MATERNITY PERIOD

The National Indication Protocol assumes the own responsibility of the maternity family. This means that a number of tasks must be arranged by the maternity family itself. For instance, extra household tasks and the care of older children (over 4 years) within the family. Usually, families can fall back on informal care: family members or friends who help out during the maternity period. It is advisable to arrange this informal care in advance.
