External version by breech position

A breech baby lies in the womb with its buttocks in the mother's pelvis and its head on top. A breech baby has a slightly higher chance of complications than a baby whose head comes out first. To prevent these complications, it is possible to turn the baby during pregnancy. We call this an external version when the baby is breech. With an external version, a breech baby can be turned into a head first position. An external version is a safe and effective way of reducing the number of breech births. The chance of a successful version is on average 65%.

VERSION EXPERTS

An external version is performed by a midwife who is specially trained to do so. PUUR Birth Centre has 4 external version experts:

  • Barbara Ebskamp
  • Michelle van der Salm
  • Margo Linssen
  • Marette Stolp

These midwives have a great deal of experience in turning breech babies and they perform the external versions at the Birth Centre. If your baby is in a breech presentation, your midwife will inform you of the possibilities of turning your baby.
