Storing breast milk

There are several ways in which you can store the expressed milk. There is a difference in how long it stays fresh:

  • Outside the refrigerator, room temperature: up to 8 hours
  • In the fridge, 3-5 degrees Celsius: up to 8 days
  • Freezer compartment in the fridge, - 10 degrees Celsius: up to 2 weeks
  • Freezer, -15 degrees Celsius: 3 months
  • Freezer, - 20 degrees Celsius: 3-6 months
  • Thawed breast milk in refrigerator: 9-24 hours
  • Thawed breast milk, room temperature: use immediately (within 1 hour)

If you want to freeze breast milk, always do so within 24 hours of expressing it.
