Copper IUD
A copper IUD is ideal for women who prefer hormone-free contraception. The natural cycle is preserved, and you can have carefree sex.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Copper paralyzes the sperm cells and makes them inactive. This prevents fertilization of an egg. Because the copper IUD is a method without hormones, you keep your natural menstrual pattern. However, the first few menstrual periods can be a bit heavier than usual. The blood loss may come a bit earlier than usual, you may bleed more heavily, and the period may be more painful or last longer. After a few months, the menstrual pattern returns to normal for most women.
A COPPER IUD AND BREAST FEEDING
A copper IUD contains no added hormones and can therefore be used safely during the breastfeeding period. It has no influence on the quantity and quality of breast milk.
T-SAFE
The copper coil T-Safe is the most commonly used copper coil in the Netherlands and offers 10 years of protection against pregnancy. The T-Safe copper IUD is a very reliable form of contraception without hormones. The side effects are minimal, and the chance of pregnancy is virtually nil (reliability > 99%).
The T-Safe IUD has a T-shape and is made of plastic (polyethylene) and copper. There are two nylon threads on the coil, which are needed to be able to remove it later. Both the IUD and the wires cannot be felt during sex.
With a copper IUD, menstruation can become heavier. T-Safe is therefore less suitable for women who suffer from cramps or a lot of blood loss during the natural cycle.

PLACEMENT
An IUD can be inserted by the midwife during the IUD consultation at PUUR. You are protected against pregnancy immediately after placement. So you no longer need to use other contraceptives. Prior to having a coil placed, make sure you read tips on IUD placing and also read information about how the placement process works.
REMOVING
Removing a spiral is a simple operation. By pulling the wires with forceps, a doctor or midwife can remove the IUD almost painlessly. You can get pregnant right away afterwards.
COST
Placing an IUD is reimbursed by most health insurers, but sometimes the costs are deducted from your deductible. Check your policy conditions for this. You usually pay the costs for the purchase of the IUD yourself.
