Heel prick

Depending on the region where you live, an employee of the child health center or the midwife will visit your home between the 5th and 8th day to perform the heel prick. If your child is in hospital for the first few days, the heel prick is sometimes done there. With a special skewer, a few drops of blood are taken from the heel of your baby. This blood is sent to the lab, where it is examined for twenty-two (this number is still expanding) rare but serious conditions.

These conditions cannot be cured. However, if they are detected in time, they can be treated well, for example with medication or a diet. In this way damage to the development of the child can be limited or prevented.

As soon as your baby has been registered with the municipality, a message will be sent to the health center that your baby has been born.
