Bladder infection

During pregnancy, it's easier to get a bladder infection, especially if you've had one before. Often, you won't notice the standard signs of a bladder infection, such as frequent urination or a burning sensation when urinating. During pregnancy, it can also manifest as nagging abdominal pain, especially in the lower abdomen, or hard bellies. It is wise to take these symptoms seriously and get cystitis treated, as an untreated cystitis can spread to the kidneys. You can then get a renal pelvic infection. Also, the irritated bladder can cause a tingle on your uterus, and you may experience contractions as a result. If you think you have a bladder infection or if you are not sure, please let us know.

CAUSE

Your bladder is pushed to the side by your uterus. In addition, your urinary tract has weakened slightly due to hormones, which can easily leave a small amount of urine in the bladder. This increases the risk of a bladder infection.

TIPS

  • Wipe from front to back after urinating
  • Pee well and take your time.
  • Drink at least 2 liters of fluid/water per day.
  • You can also take cranberry tablets or drink cranberry juice. This reduces the risk of bladder infections.

If you think you have a bladder infection, it's a good idea to take some urine to your doctor. He/she can check your urine and if necessary, prescribe antibiotics. This will always be an antibiotic that is safe to use during pregnancy.
