Candida

Candida is a fungal infection in or around the vagina. You can easily catch it during pregnancy. It is characterized by white granular discharge and itching of the labia. Sometimes you can get pain during sex. Candida is not dangerous for you or the baby, but it is annoying. Your GP can prescribe medication which will make the complaints disappear.

CAUSE

The candida fungus grows in the intestines and is constantly present in and around the vagina in most women. If the vagina contains sufficient healthy bacteria, the fungus doesn't get a chance to grow. During pregnancy your resistance is lower than normal, so you may be affected by this infection more quickly.

TIPS

It is best to wear cotton underwear and not to wash your lower parts with soap. Soap disturbs the acidity of the vagina and therefore increases the risk of candida.
For your vaginal wash you had best use warm water or special soap. The acidity level of these soaps has been adjusted. Recent studies have also shown that taking probiotics can have a preventive effect on the development of a candida infection.
