Fluid retention

Especially in the last weeks of your pregnancy you may notice that you retain more fluid and feel swollen. You may notice, for example, that your fingers, your ankles, and your face are swollen. Especially after a day of standing, your ankles and insteps can become quite thick. Hands and fingers can also swell considerably, and it can even become painful for your joints.

CAUSE

Pregnancy hormones cause you to retain extra fluid. You can notice this throughout your body. This fluid is necessary for your tissues to sag and stretch. On average, women retain 2 to 3 litres of fluid during pregnancy.

TIPS

  • Raise the foot of your bed or put a pillow under your mattress. This will help you wake up with slim ankles and be a little less bothered by them throughout the day.
  • Remember to take off your rings in time.
  • If you suddenly start retaining a lot of fluids in a short space of time, get a swollen face, and also start to feel unwell (headache, nausea, stomachache), always contact your midwife.
