Itching
One of the most annoying pregnancy ailments is itching. It is a common ailment, especially in the last trimester.
Most forms of itching during pregnancy are relatively harmless and are caused by hormonal changes and/or stretching of the skin. It often starts on the abdomen and spreads throughout the body. If the itching is accompanied by a rash, it is a good idea to show it to your doctor.
CAUSE
Sometimes pregnancy cholestasis occurs. This is when the liver, due to hormonal changes, leaves more bile acids in the bloodstream. A typical complaint is itching on the palms of your hands and/or the soles of your feet. If you are suffering from this, contact your midwife. Cholestasis can have consequences for your baby. A blood test will determine whether this is the case. If this is the case, medication will be started.
TIPS
- Take alternating hot/cold baths
